Article: Riding Safely As the Days Get Shorter

Riding Safely As the Days Get Shorter

If your commute or evening ride is starting to feel a little darker than it did last month, you're not imagining it. Sunset keeps creeping earlier through the fall, and with Daylight Saving Time ending November 1, that shift happens all at once. A few small habits, and a couple of things you may already have sitting in a box, can help you stay visible and ride with more confidence as the light changes.

Use the lights already on your bike

Every Cikada e-bike comes standard with a front and rear light. Get in the habit of turning them on anytime you're riding in the late afternoon or evening, not just after full dark. Drivers spot moving lights well before they spot a rider in dim light, so this is the easiest habit on this list to build.

Check if you've installed your reflectors yet

Every Cikada e-bike ships with wheel reflectors, a front reflector, and a rear reflector in the box. If you built your bike yourself, it's worth checking whether these made it onto the bike or got set aside during assembly, it's a common step to skip. Installing them takes just a few minutes and adds visibility from angles your lights alone don't cover, especially for drivers approaching from the side. And if you're wondering about your pedals: those already have reflectors built in, so that part's covered no matter what.

Give yourself more room to stop

Wet leaves and damp roads reduce traction more than most riders expect, and fall brings both. Leave extra stopping distance, especially through turns and at intersections, and take corners a little slower than you would on a dry summer road.

Choose your route with light in mind

If you have options, a well lit street is worth a few extra minutes over a shortcut through a dark stretch. It's an easy trade that adds real confidence to an evening ride.

Do a quick once over before the season shifts

Before shorter days and cooler temps really set in, it's worth checking that your brakes feel responsive and your tires have good tread, small maintenance now goes a long way once the roads turn wet and dark comes early.

None of this is about riding less this fall, it's about riding smart. A few adjusted habits, and making sure the visibility gear that came with your bike is actually on it, help keep your Cikada just as reliable for your evening commute in November as it was for your July weekend ride.
