Article: Why Your Range Looks Different As It Gets Colder

Why Your Range Looks Different As It Gets Colder

As temperatures drop this fall, you may notice your range looking a little different than it did over the summer. It's one of the most common questions we hear this time of year, so let's break down what's actually happening, and what you can do about it.

Why cold weather affects range

Lithium-ion batteries, the kind used in every e-bike, not just Cikada's, rely on chemical reactions to deliver power. Cold temperatures slow those reactions down, which temporarily reduces how much energy the battery can put out at once. That shows up as reduced range on a cold ride.

This is normal, and it's temporary. It's not a sign of battery damage or a defect, and performance typically returns to normal once temperatures warm back up. Riders in colder parts of the country will notice this more than riders in milder climates, and it becomes more noticeable as temperatures drop further into winter.

What helps

Store and charge your battery at room temperature when you can. If your battery is removable, bringing it inside overnight rather than leaving it in a cold garage helps it perform closer to its usual capacity for your morning ride.

Check your owner's manual for charging temperature guidance. Charging a battery when it's very cold isn't ideal for most lithium-ion batteries, so it's worth knowing your model's recommended range.

Use a steady, moderate assist level. Higher assist levels draw more power at once, which can be felt more on a cold battery. A little more pedal input on cold days helps you get more out of each charge.

Plan for a shorter effective range and charge a bit more often. Once you know what to expect, it's easy to adjust; check your bike's display or the Cikada app for a real time estimate rather than relying on your summer range as a baseline.

If range headroom matters to you

For riders who want more distance built in from the start, especially useful heading into a season where range naturally dips, our Touring model is built with distance in mind, so cold weather range reduction has more room to work with before it affects your ride.

None of this means less riding this fall and winter. A few adjusted habits, and knowing what to expect, keep your rides just as reliable as they were in warmer months.
